Karnataka gives you more pre-wedding looks inside one state than almost anywhere in India: coffee estates in Coorg, palaces in Mysore, misty ridges in Chikmagalur, boulder fields in Hampi, a beach coastline from Gokarna to Udupi, and granite hills you can reach from Bangalore before breakfast.
It also has more shoot restrictions than most couples expect. Bangalore's two big gardens no longer allow pre-wedding work, the Mysore Palace Board does not encourage it, and Hampi needs permission from more than one authority. This guide is written from our Bangalore studio on Kanakapura Main Road. For each place it gives the drive time from Bangalore, the best season, what permission to expect, and what the day costs. For spots inside the city, see our guide to pre-wedding shoot locations near Bangalore.

1. Nandi Hills & Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple
The easiest "wow" shot from Bangalore. On a good morning the valley fills with cloud and the sun comes up over it, and the granite edges and old fort walls give you foreground without any styling. It is about 60 km from the city, so you leave in the dark and are home by lunch.
Permission: the hill is run by the Karnataka Horticulture Department. Visitors pay at the gate, and professional camera kit has been charged a separate photography fee at the office on top; ask for the current rate on the day, because it has changed more than once. Weekend parking fills before sunrise and the gate can close once it does, so shoot on a weekday. Pitfall: the crowd arrives with the sun. Plan your hero frames for the first 30 minutes of light, which is about all you get anyway (Bangalore's golden hour lasts about 28 minutes).
At the foot of the hill, the Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple in Nandi village is one of the oldest temples near Bangalore and a protected monument. Its stepped tank and carved pillared halls are a strong second location for traditional outfits. It is an active temple, so a professional shoot needs permission from the monument authorities first, and you dress as you would for a darshan.
2. Day Trips: Ramanagara, Savandurga, Kanakapura Road & Shivanasamudra
If you only have one day and do not want a 5 am alarm, these give you a landscape that looks nothing like the city.
- Ramanagara (about 1–1.5 hrs): the granite hills made famous by Sholay. Huge boulders and open scrubland, best in the last hour of light. Parts of the hills are a protected vulture habitat, so stay on the public side and skip the drone.
- Savandurga (about 1.5 hrs): one of the largest monolith hills in Asia. The base and the lower slopes work well; the full climb is a trek, not a shoot in a lehenga.
- Kanakapura Road (1–2.5 hrs): the road our studio is on. Farm stays, rocky outcrops and quiet village lanes within an hour, and further out the river country around Sangama and Mekedatu. Most good spots here are private land, which means permission is a conversation with the owner, not an application.
- Shivanasamudra Falls (about 3 hrs): worth it only after the monsoon, roughly July to October, when the falls are full. Viewpoints are railed and busy, so treat it as one wide frame plus portraits nearby.
3. Mysore, Srirangapatna & KRS
Mysore is where couples come for the heritage look: arches, domes and royal scale. The Bengaluru–Mysuru expressway has cut the drive to about three hours.
The honest part about Mysore Palace: tourists can photograph the palace, but the Mysore Palace Board has said publicly that pre-wedding shoots are not encouraged on palace premises, and a 2016 shoot inside the palace led to an investigation of the officials who allowed it. Do not build your day around the palace interiors. The exterior and the illuminated palace on Sundays and holidays make good backdrops from public ground.
What works instead:
- Lalitha Mahal Palace: a palace that is also a hotel, so access is arranged with the hotel rather than a government office. The white facade and lawns are the most "palace" frames you can actually book.
- Srirangapatna: river ghats on the Kaveri, old fort walls and quiet temple lanes 20 minutes before Mysore. Protected monuments here, such as Daria Daulat Bagh, need permission for professional cameras.
- Karanji Lake: lakeside paths and birdlife, run as a ticketed attraction. Good in the early morning.
- KRS & Brindavan Gardens: terraced gardens and evening fountains. Crowded and ticketed; treat it as a fun 30-minute stop, not the main location.
- Chamundi Hills: the viewpoint road over the city at sunset. The temple itself is a place of worship, not a set.
Best time: October to February. Dasara (September/October) is beautiful but the city is packed; plan around it, not during it.

4. Coorg (Kodagu)
The most requested Karnataka destination, and the easiest to shoot well: rows of coffee under silver oak, mist in the valleys, old estate bungalows with deep verandas. Madikeri is about five hours from Bangalore via Mysore.
- Coffee estates and homestays: the heart of the shoot. On a private estate the owner's consent is the only permission you need, and many include it with your stay. Pick one estate with variety (plantation rows, a bungalow, a stream or pond) and shoot sunrise and golden hour there instead of driving between viewpoints.
- Abbey Falls: a short walk through a plantation to a hanging bridge. Ticketed and crowded by mid-morning, so arrive at opening time.
- Mandalpatti: grassland ridges above the clouds, reached by jeep on a rough road. Spectacular at sunrise; check the forest checkpost timings the day before.
- Resorts: large Coorg resorts have trails, pools and plantation paths in one place. Ask in writing whether outside photographers pay a shoot fee and whether drones are allowed.
Best time: October to March for clear skies. June to September gives the deep-green monsoon look, but heavy rain, slippery estates and leeches come with it: plan footwear and a rain-day backup.
5. Chikmagalur
More rugged than Coorg: open grass ridges, mist that rolls over the road, and coffee estates with fewer tourists. About 4.5 to 5 hours from Bangalore.
Mullayanagiri and Bababudangiri: Mullayanagiri is the highest peak in Karnataka and the ridge road is the classic shot. Access is now controlled. The district runs vehicle entry in two daily slots (6 am to noon and 1 pm to 6 pm, with a cap on vehicles per slot), and online booking has been mandatory since September 2025. Entry is suspended on red-alert days and during temple fairs. Because the first slot opens at 6 am, a sunrise at the summit is tight: plan the ridge for the early-morning slot and the estates for golden hour.
Also good: Hebbe Falls (by estate jeep), Hirekolale Lake at sunset, and coffee blossom season, when the estates turn white and fragrant for a few days after the first summer showers, usually between late February and April.
6. Hampi
The most cinematic place within reach of Bangalore: a UNESCO World Heritage Site of temple ruins, boulder hills and the Tungabhadra river. Six to seven hours by road, or an overnight train to Hosapete.
Permission is the whole story here. Hampi's monuments are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Boards across the site say drones are not permitted, and pre-wedding shoots, tripods and commercial photography need special permission. A 2020 pre-wedding video shot at the Vijaya Vittala temple without permission led the ASI to order an inquiry. A shoot in the monument zones needs permission from the ASI and the Hampi World Heritage Area Management Authority, applied for well in advance.
How to plan it: monument frames only with permission in hand; otherwise the boulder landscapes, paddy fields, coracle rides on the river and the Anegundi side, which give you the Hampi look with far fewer rules. Best time: November to February only. The stone gets punishingly hot after that.
7. The Coast: Gokarna, Murudeshwar & Udupi
Karnataka's only beach option, and much quieter than Goa.
- Gokarna: Om, Kudle and Half Moon beaches, red laterite cliffs and headland walks. Sunset is the window; the trails between beaches are part of the shoot.
- Murudeshwar: the giant Shiva statue on a headland makes a dramatic wide frame from the beach. The temple complex is a place of worship, so keep the shoot on the shore.
- Udupi, Malpe & St Mary's Island: St Mary's Island has unusual hexagonal basalt columns on the sand. Boats run from Malpe outside the monsoon only. In Udupi town, the Sri Krishna Matha has banned wedding photoshoots on its premises, so do not plan one there.
Best time: November to February. Drive 7 to 9 hours, or fly to Mangaluru and drive up the coast.
8. Worth a Look Later: Sakleshpur, Kabini, Belur–Halebidu
- Sakleshpur (about 4 hrs): estates and misty hills like Coorg with fewer people, plus the star-shaped Manjarabad Fort.
- Kabini (4.5–5 hrs): backwaters and jungle lodges on the edge of Nagarhole. Shoots happen on lodge grounds and the waterfront, not inside the forest, and drones are out near the reserve.
- Belur and Halebidu (about 4 hrs): the Hoysala temples, added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2023. Extraordinary carved stone, but protected monuments: same ASI rules as Hampi.

Pre-Wedding Shoot Price in Karnataka (2026)
A Karnataka shoot costs three things: the photography, the travel, and whatever the location charges.
| Item | WeddingClickz price |
|---|---|
| Pre-wedding shoot, one day (6–7 hours) | ₹45,000 |
| Pre-wedding shoot, two days (12 hours) | ₹60,000 |
| Drone coverage, where the site allows it | ₹5,000 |
| Team travel, stay and food outside Bangalore | At actual cost, no markup |
| Entry tickets, permission and estate or resort fees | Paid to the location; confirmed in writing first |
So a Nandi Hills sunrise is the one-day package plus fuel and gate fees. A Coorg or Chikmagalur weekend is usually the two-day package, plus drone if the estate allows it, plus the crew's travel and two nights' stay. For how the market prices these trips more broadly, see the cost table in our Bangalore locations guide.
Two Sample Plans From Bangalore
One day: Nandi Hills sunrise
- 3:45 am leave Bangalore, hair and make-up done the night before or in the car.
- 5:30 am at the gate; walk to the sunrise edge.
- Sunrise + 45 min hero frames in the first light, then fort walls and granite.
- 8:30 am breakfast and outfit change.
- 9:30–11 am second look at Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple (with permission) or a farm stay nearby.
- 1 pm back in the city.
Weekend: Coorg
- Day 1: leave at 5 am, reach the estate by late morning, rest, then shoot plantation rows and the bungalow through golden hour.
- Day 2: sunrise mist on the estate (or Mandalpatti if the weather is clear), a relaxed second outfit after breakfast, and head back after lunch.
Drone Rules for Karnataka Shoots
India's drone rules divide the airspace into green, yellow and red zones on the DGCA's Digital Sky map. Green zones need a registered drone and a certified pilot; yellow zones (including roughly 12 km around airports) need prior permission; red zones need clearance from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the zone owner. On top of that, the site owner decides: ASI monuments such as Hampi ban drones, and forest areas and wildlife reserves are off limits. We check the map and the site rules for your exact location before we quote the drone.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best place for a pre-wedding shoot in Karnataka?
For most couples from Bangalore, Coorg: the coffee estates photograph beautifully in every season and permission is simple on private land. Choose Hampi for a heritage look, Chikmagalur for mist and ridges, and Nandi Hills if you only have one morning.
Is a pre-wedding photoshoot allowed at Mysore Palace?
Tourist photography is allowed, but the Mysore Palace Board has said pre-wedding shoots are not encouraged on palace premises. Plan the palace as a backdrop from public ground and book Lalitha Mahal or Srirangapatna for the heritage frames.
Can we do a pre-wedding shoot at Hampi?
Yes, with permission. Shoots inside the monument zones need permission from the ASI and the Hampi World Heritage Area Management Authority, and drones are not allowed. The boulder landscapes, river and villages around Hampi give you the look with far fewer restrictions.
How much does a pre-wedding shoot in Karnataka cost?
With WeddingClickz, ₹45,000 for one day or ₹60,000 for two days, plus ₹5,000 for drone where allowed. Outside Bangalore the team's travel and stay are billed at actual cost, and location fees are paid to the location.
When is the best time for a pre-wedding shoot in Karnataka?
October to February suits almost everywhere. The hill districts are lush but wet from June to September, Hampi and the coast are best from November to February, and Chikmagalur's coffee blossom comes in late February to April.
Can we shoot two places in one day?
Only if they are close: Nandi Hills with Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple, or Srirangapatna with Mysore. Two distant places in one day means losing the best light to the drive.
Can we shoot at temples in Karnataka?
Many active temples do not allow wedding shoots at all (Udupi's Sri Krishna Matha has banned them), and protected temples such as Belur, Halebidu and Bhoga Nandeeshwara need permission for professional cameras. Ask before you plan a temple look.
